Summer School on WWII Forced Labour and Public History\u201d we had the opportunity to learn how to conduct interviews with contemporary witnesses and to work with various historical archives.<\/p>\n<p>The main idea was for every participant to research their own family history connected to WWII forced labour and its victims.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>workshops<\/strong> were led <strong>online by historians Anna Jatchenko and Andrij Ucatch<\/strong> from \u041f\u0456\u0441\u043b\u044f \u0442\u0438\u0448\u0456 \u2013 After Silence, our Lviv-based partners.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221; color=&#8221;#aab499&#8243; thickness=&#8221;3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]Our project kicked off with our group of young people from Ukraine, Poland and Germany <strong>coming together in G\u00f6rlitZgorzelec<\/strong>. We not only visited the site but also engaged deeply with its history, focusing on individual biographies of the prisoners. The guided tour was led by Alexandra Grochowski, head of Meetingpoint Memory Messiaen e.V.<\/p>\n<p>We concluded the morning by commemorating the victims of the camp at the nearby cemetery of Soviet prisoners of war.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221; color=&#8221;#aab499&#8243; thickness=&#8221;3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]During the <strong>workshop \u201cMy \u2018picture\u2019 of WWII,\u201d<\/strong> our<strong> volunteer Luzie Kothera<\/strong> encouraged the group to reflect on where their knowledge of WWII comes from\u2014family stories, school education, or experiences connected to memorial sites. The German <strong>historian Felix Ackermann<\/strong> introduced us to this field. Under his guidance we visited the <strong>exhibition \u201cG\u00f6rlitz im Nationalsozialismus.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We analyzed its design, storytelling approach and overall message. We ended the day with a discussion comparing museum practices in Ukraine, Poland and Germany.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column][vc_separator type=&#8221;normal&#8221; color=&#8221;#aab499&#8243; thickness=&#8221;3&#8243;][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row css_animation=&#8221;&#8221; row_type=&#8221;row&#8221; use_row_as_full_screen_section=&#8221;no&#8221; type=&#8221;full_width&#8221; angled_section=&#8221;no&#8221; text_align=&#8221;left&#8221; background_image_as_pattern=&#8221;without_pattern&#8221;][vc_column width=&#8221;2\/3&#8243;][vc_empty_space][vc_column_text]During a visit to the <strong>memorial site of Gross-Rosen <\/strong>in present-day Rogo\u017anica, we confronted the extremely harsh reality faced by forced labourers in German concentration camps. The workshop focused especially on the female perspective of forced labourers. Using a digital map, we explored several sites of forced labour. In an <strong>interview with MDR Sachsenspiegel<\/strong>, Vitalina Voitenko spoke about her project focusing on her great-grandfather, who was forced to work in Saxony during WWII. During morning and evening gatherings we also address personal topics and <strong>strengthen our connection as an international group<\/strong>. His expertise supported nearly every group in the realization of their projects.
